PART 5 - Solution to Problem 1

The Repair Chairman studied the external area of the Church to be painted and divided it into 7 approximately equal parts. In each of the 7 parts he painted, in bold white lettering, the full name of the member of the congregation who had promised to help paint the church and added after each name the words 'PROMISED to paint this area' and so that the message read:
'Mr. . . . PROMISED to paint this area'.
Once the various male volunteers saw their names in print, and realised that everyone else could see that they had not kept their promises, they quickly set to and completed the promised paintwork.
