CUED's Engineering Design Challenges

NAGTY HE Gateway

Cambridge University Engineering Department's Higher Education Gateway for NAGTY

CUED Higher Education Gateway

The Higher Education Gateway Engineering Design Challenges are part of the Aimhigher national project led by the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, a community of gifted and talented students from the age of 11 to 19. The Gateway allows students to extend their knowledge, interact with academics from a number of Universities in the UK, meet other enthused students and enjoy themselves.

The Engineering Design Challenges are part of a number of events being offered by Cambridge University and are structured to give students to opportunity to experience working as part of a team on a problem in a similar manner to commercial design and build projects.

The challenges typically last for 1-2 months during which time teams of students, working across the internet using resources supplied as part of the project together with material obtained by research design a component or system, e.g. a deployable roof for a sports stadium.

On-line mentoring and technical support is given and at the end of the initial period a design and short description is submitted for design review. Once the design is approved components are constructed at the University prior to a day event, normally on a Saturday, at which the team constructs and tests the system. Review and analysis of the completed system is both carried out on the day and during the following weeks on-line with the mentors.

If you are interesed in taking part in any of the challenges please refer to the NAGTY Student Academy to find the dates and joining details of forthcoming events.

Further information about other activities and resources for schools and students organised by the Cambridge University Engineering Department is available on the Department's Outreach website.
