Kit
The kit available for the Spring-Powered Vehicle project consists of a limited number of standard engineering materials together with some project specific materials. The standard materials and components are identified below.
If teams wish to use components or materials not on the lists below this must be agreed with the mentors.
- Outside Diameter 10mm
- Wire Diameter 0.9mm
- Free Length 68mm
- Spring Rate 0.15N/mm
- Initial Tension 3.3N (The initial tension is the force required to slightly separate the coils.)
- Maximum Extension Length 206mm
- Load at maximum extension 24 N

- 4mm aluminium rod
- 2mm mild steel rod
- 3mm mild steel rod (300mm long)
- 4mm mild steel rod (600mm long)
- 20swg Aluminium sheet
- 3.5mm plywood
- Corriflute plastic sheet (610mm x 610mm. x 4mm)
- Rigid PVC foam sheet (1000 x 500 x 3mm)
- Gears with brass hub and locking grub screw. All gears have 4mm running centre holes. Gears available are 10 tooth (10mm), 20 tooth (20mm), 30 tooth (30mm), 40 tooth (40mm), 50 tooth (50mm). polythene gears with diameters of approx. 15mm, 22mm, 32mm and 40mm. (Tooth count 12, 20, 30 and 40.) All 6mm thick with 3mm centre holes
- Polythene wheels 39 or 75mm (with hole for 3mm axle)
- MDF wheels 40 or 50mm
- IDP wheels (details to be added)
- Or, you may wish to manufacture your own wheels!
- M3/M4 nuts and washers
- M3 x 10, 20, socket head cap screws
- M4 x 10, 20, socket head cap screws
- M3/M4 studding (Max length 600mm)
- 1/8in Pop rivets

The spring is a simple extension spring of the type shown in
the Associated Springs Website. Specific details of the spring used in this project are given below. A sample spring will be supplied to each participant in the introductory information pack.
